Tony winner Elizabeth Franz will play the title role in The Piano Teacher the new play by Julia Cho Durango at off Broadway's Vineyard Theater. Directed by Kate Whoriskey, The Piano Teacher begins previews on October 30 and is set to open on November 18.
Cho's new play is described as the story of a retired piano teacher who seaches out her former pupils to be played in the Vineyard production by Bethany Butler and John Boyd to find out why they suddenly stopped taking her lessons years before.
Franz won a 1999 Tony Award for her performance as Linda Loman in Death of a Salesman and received Tony nominations for Morning's at Seven and Brighton Beach Memoirs. Most recently, she played Alfred Molina's mother in Howard Katz. Other Broadway credits include Uncle Vanya, Getting Married, The Cemetery Club, Broadway Bound, The Octette Bridge Club, The Cherry Orchard and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. Notable off-Broadway credits include the title role in Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All for You, The Cripple of Inishmaan, Minutes from the Blue Route, The Comedy of Errors and Children of the Sun.
The Piano Teacher will have set design by Derek McLane, costume design by Ilona Somogyi, lighting design by David Weiner and original music and sound design by Obadiah Eaves.
