Audra McDonald has cancelled four concert appearances with the New York Philharmonic that had been planned for March 5-8, 2008. Opera star Dawn Upshaw will step in and perform Berio's Folk Songs with the Philharmonic on those dates. According to a news release from the orchestra, "Ms. Upshaw has graciously agreed to replace soprano Audra McDonald, who has reluctantly had to withdraw due to scheduling conflicts with her television series, Private Practice." McDonald plays fertility expert Dr. Naomi Bennett on ABC's spinoff of Grey's Anatomy.
Upshaw's concerts will be conducted by Alan Gilbert on a program that includes Haydn's Symphony No. 48, Maria Theresia, and Beethoven's Symphony No. 4. Further information will be announced at a future date.
A four-time Tony Award winner for her performances in A Raisin in the Sun, Ragtime, Master Class and Carousel. McDonald was nominated for a 2007 Tony for her leading role in 110 in the Shade.
