A week before previews begin, Classic Stage Company has extended the run of its forthcoming production of Anton Chekhov's The Seagull for two weeks, through April 13. Starring two-time Academy Award winner Dianne Wiest and Tony Award winner Alan Cumming, The Seagull begins performances on February 20 and opens on March 13, directed by Viacheslav Dolgachev.
In addition to Wiest and Cumming, the cast of The Seagull includes Bill Christ, Kelli Garner, Ryan Homchick, John Christopher Jones, Greg Keller, Marjan Neshat, Ryan O'Nan, Annette O'Toole and David Rasche.
Written in 1896, The Seagull is widely regarded as Chekhov's first masterpiece, subtly dissecting the affairs of the heart and the demands of a life in the arts, while balancing the comic, the lyric and the tragic in a manner that has become the hallmark of his work.
CSC's production of The Seagull features sets by Santo Loquasto, costumes by Suzy Benzinger, lighting by Tony Award winner Brian MacDevitt, sound design by Jorge Muelle and hair design by Paul Huntley. The translation is by Paul Schmidt.
