Gavin Creel to Play Jesus in Broadway Revival of Godspell

Gavin Creel will play the role of Jesus in the upcoming Broadway revival of Godspell, according to Variety. The show is heading to the Great White Way this summer at a yet-to-be-determined Shubert house and will be directed by Daniel Goldstein, who staged a production at Paper Mill Playhouse in 2006 that caught the eye of producer Adam Epstein.

Creel was last seen on Broadway as Jean-Michel in the 2005 revival of La Cage aux Folles. He received a Best Actor Tony nomination for his performance as Jimmy in Thoroughly Modern Millie and appeared off-Broadway in Bat Boy. On the London stage, he played Bert in Mary Poppins.

With music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz Wicked, Pippin and book by John-Michael Tebelak, Godspell features adaptations and parables of the New Testament's Gospel according to St. Matthew. No other casting for the revival has been set.
