Three-time Tony Award-winner Frank Langella has signed on to play Sir Thomas More in the first Broadway revival of Robert Bolt's A Man for All Seasons for Roundabout Theatre Company. The production will begin previews on September 12 at the American Airlines Theatre and open on October 7, directed by Doug Hughes.
A timeless exploration of politics, religion and power, A Man for All Seasons is based on the true story of English Chancellor Sir Thomas More and his moral objection to King Henry VIII's plan to leave the Catholic Church. A Man for All Seasons premiered on Broadway in 1961 and won the Tony Award for Best Play. In 1966, the play was made into a feature film and went on to win six Oscars, including a Best Actor prize for the late Paul Scofield as More.
Hughes, a Tony winner for Doubt, is a Resident Director at Roundabout where he recently directed Patrick Marber's Howard Katz, Eugene O'Neill's A Touch of the Poet, Richard Greenberg's comedy A Naked Girl on the Appian Way, Jon Robin Baitz's The Paris Letter.
The design team will include Santo Loquasto sets, Catherine Zuber costumes and David Lander lights. Additional cast members and design team will be announced shortly.
