Spiegelworld will return to the South Street Seaport Pier 17 for its third annual summer carnival, beginning August 6 and running through November 2, 2008. Two tents located under the Brooklyn Bridge on the East River-The Salon Perdu and The Deluxe-will host the world premiere of Desir, a circus-style theater piece, and the return of Absinthe, a risqué showcase featuring talent culled from cabaret dens across the world.
Directed by Wayne Harrison, formerly of Sydney Theater Company, Desir is inspired by the uninhibited art scene of early 20th century Paris, and will take audiences backstage at the titular nightclub, a legendary hotspot that existed even before the mythic Moulin Rouge. Choreography is by John "Cha Cha" O'Connell Enchanted, Moulin Rouge with music direction from Josh Abrahams Moulin Rouge. The Parisian jewelry house Boucheron is contributing to the show's scenic design.
A summer favorite since 2006, Absinthe is a glitzy, decadent extravaganza showcasing an all-new lineup of sexy, seedy entertainment. Hosted by "the Gazillionaire," the show features Icarian Games from Italy, the Duo Sergio from the Ukraine and the Duo Ssens from Quebec. Other noteworthy acts include the Willers, a roller-skating couple, and Russia's own Princess Anya, whose billed as "the world's most beautiful woman."
