The Broadway revival of David Mamet's American Buffalo is now confirmed to start performances on October 31, with an opening set for November 17. John Leguizamo and Cedric the Entertainer will star in the drama set in a Chicago pawnshop. Robert Falls Death of a Salesman, Aida, Long Day's Journey Into Night, Talk Radio directs.
American Buffalo tells the story of a trio of small-time crooks who come to blows over a plan to steal a valuable buffalo nickel. The play premiered off-Broadway in 1976 and won the 1977 Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best American Play. Al Pacino appeared in a 1981 off-Broadway revival as the elder crook, known as "Teach," and William H. Macy played the role in a 2000 revival at Atlantic Theater Company, the New York company founded by Macy and Mamet. Dustin Hoffman played the role in a 1996 film version of the play.
Leguizamo made a splash on the New York stage with his one-man off-Broadway show Mambo Mouth in 1991. He followed up that success with Spic-O-Rama at the Westside Theatre the following year, before turning his attentions on the big screen notable Hollywood credits include Carlito's Way, To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar, Romeo + Juliet, Summer of Sam, Moulin Rouge and Ice Age. He made his Broadway debut in 1998 with the Tony-nominated play Freak, which was more autobiographical than his earlier shows. Sexaholix…a love story bowed on Broadway in 2001, returning for a second engagement in 2003. American Buffalo is Leguizamo's first foray into a character play on the stage.
Cedric the Entertainer first gained attention as a stand-up comedian, getting big laughs in the 2000 feature film The Original Kings of Comedy. He soon became a popular presence in Hollywood comedies like Big Momma's House, Ice Age, Barbershop, Johnson Family Vacation, Be Cool, Madagascar, The Honeymooners, Charlotte's Web and Welcome Home, Roscoe Jenkins. American Buffalo will mark his stage debut.
