Casting is complete for the Roundabout Theatre Company's forthcoming Broadway revival of Pal Joey, which will star the previously announced trio of Stockard Channing, Christian Hoff and Martha Plimpton. Directed by Joe Mantello, the musical will begin previews on November 14 at Studio 54 and open on December 11. The limited engagement is scheduled to run through February 15, 2009.
The company will include Robert Clohessy 12 Angry Men as Mike, Jenny Fellner Mamma Mia! as Linda English, Daniel Marcus The Woman in White as Ludlow Lowell, Steven Skybell Wicked as Ernest and Timothy J. Alex Dirty Rotten Scoundrels as Brian Barry. The ensemble and swings will include Bahiyah Sayyed Gaines, Lisa Gajda, Anthony Holds, Nadine Isenegger, Mark Morettini, Kathryn Mowat Murphy, Abbey O'Brien, Hayley Podschun, Matthew Risch, Krista Saab and Eric Sciotto.
The Roundabout's production, presented in association with Marc Platt, will pair Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart's classic 1940 score with a new book by Tony Award winner Richard Greenberg, based on the original book by John O'Hara, with music direction by Paul Gemignani and choreography by Graciela Daniele.
Pal Joey premiered on Broadway on December 25, 1940, in a production directed and produced by George Abbott, and starring Gene Kelly and Vivienne Segal. A smash hit 1952 Broadway revival revealed the show as a true landmark Broadway musical, winning three Tony Awards and the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Musical. A film of the musical was made in 1957, starring Frank Sinatra, Rita Hayworth, and Kim Novak. Bob Fosse received a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a 1963 production, and a 1976 revival at Circle in the Square starred Dixie Carter. Pal Joey was featured in the second season of Encores! at New York City Center in a 1995 concert version starring Patti LuPone and Peter Gallagher.
The creative team includes Scott Pask sets, William Ivey Long costumes, Peggy Eisenhauer and Jules Fisher lights, Tony Meola sound, Don Sebesky orchestrator and Eric Stern dance arranger.
