The new musical adaptation of Jack Heifner's hit play Vanities will begin previews on Broadway on February 2, 2009, at an unspecified Shubert theater. The show is currently getting a pre-Broadway production at the Pasadena Playhouse, where it will open on August 29 and run through September 28, directed by Judith Ivey.
In Vanities, Lauren Kennedy Mary, Sarah Stiles Joanne and Anneliese van der Pol Kathy play a trio of Texans whose lives and loves are tracked from their high school years in the early 1960s through the late 1980s. Heifer has written the show's book, based on his long-running off-Broadway comedy, with music and lyrics by David Kirshenbaum Summer of 42, Party Come Here. Dan Knechtges is the choreographer.
Vanities, was originally produced at TheatreWorks in Palo Alto, CA in the summer of 2006 where it won two Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle Awards. The show was then presented at the 2006 National Alliance for Musical Theatre NAMT Festival of New Musicals.
Vanities will be produced on Broadway by Junkyard Dog Productions and Bartner/Jenkins Entertainment, in association with Demos Bizar Entertainment.
