Dates Set for Danny Hoch's Taking Over at the Public

The Public Theater has set dates for its New York premiere of Taking Over, a new solo play by OBIE winner Danny Hoch. Directed by Tony Taccone, the show will begin previews on November 7 and open on November 23. The limited engagement is scheduled to run off-Broadway through December 14.

In Taking Over, Hoch chronicles the current state of gentrification of New York City, giving voice to everyone from the developers evicting locals to make way for lofts to the bar-hopping career hipsters who buy them, and those left in the wake of both. Taking Over is described as a raw, explosive, hilarious and heartbreaking study of the impact of our obsession with economic expansion.

Prior to the show's run at the Public, the Hip-Hop Theater Festival and the Public will present free performances of Taking Over October 1-11 in neighborhoods most affected by the play's topic: the South Bronx, Long Island City in Queens and Williamsburg in Brooklyn.

Hoch last performed at the Public in 1994 with his solo show Some People. His other shows include Pot Melting and Jails, Hospitals & Hip-Hop and have garnered two OBIES, an NEA Solo Theatre Fellowship, Sundance Writers Fellowship, CalArts/Alpert Award In Theatre and a Tennessee Williams Fellowship. Hoch's theater pieces have toured to 50 U.S. cities and 15 countries.
