The summer’s thrice-extended revival of Hair will put down roots on Broadway, beginning previews at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre on February 13. The transfer of the tribal-rock musical, directed by Diane Paulus, will open on March 5. No casting has been announced at this time.
Hair, written by James Rado and Gerome Ragni with music by Galt MacDermot, was originally produced by the Public Theater. It opened on April 29, 1968, becoming the first off-Broadway musical to transfer to Broadway, where it ran for 1,873 performances. With a score including enduring musical numbers like "Let the Sun Shine In," "Aquarius," "Hair" and "Good Morning Starshine," Hair depicts the birth of a cultural movement in the 60s and 70s as told through a tribe of hopeful radicals living in New York City while war rages in Vietnam. The transfer marks Hair’s first appearance on Broadway since its 1968 debut.
The show’s 2008 Public Theater revival, which began previews at the Delacorte Theatre on July 22, concluded its extended run on September 14.
