The feature film versions of three Broadway hits, Doubt, Frost/Nixon and Mamma Mia!, received multiple nominations for the 66th Golden Globe Awards, including a pair of lead actress nominations for Meryl Streep. The Globes include separate categories for Drama and Comedy/Musical lead performances. The awards will be presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in a telecast on January 11.
Doubt and Frost/Nixon were cited in five categories. Doubt received nominations for Best Actress Streep, Best Supporting Actor Philip Seymour Hoffman, Best Supporting Actress Amy Adams and Viola Davis and Best Screenplay John Patrick Shanley. Frost/Nixon was nominated for Best Picture Drama, Best Actor Frank Langella, Best Director Ron Howard, Best Screenplay Peter Morgan and Best Original Score Hans Zimmer. Mamma Mia! received nominations for Best Picture Musical or Comedy and Streep’s lead performance.
A surprise recipient of three nominations was In Bruges, the first full-length feature directed and written by playwright Martin McDonagh, which was cited for Best Picture Musical or Comedy and for leading performances by Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson.
Three of the five Best Screenplay nominees are playwrights. Morgan and Shanley are joined by David Hare The Reader, along with Simon Beaufoy Slumdog Millionaire and Eric Roth The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. In the Best Director category, Howard will compete with theater vets Stephen Daldry The Readers and Sam Mendes Revolutionary Road, along with Danny Boyle Slumdog Millionaire and David Fincher The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
Nominees with theatrical roots include Mary-Louise Parker Weeds, Michael C. Hall Dexter, Laura Linney John Adams and current Broadway leading players Kristin Scott Thomas I’ve Loved You So Long, Dianne Wiest In Treatment and Jeremy Piven Entourage. The made-for-TV movie version of A Raisin in the Sun was nominated for Best Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television.
