Four-time Tony nominee Tovah Feldshuh will bring her acclaimed performance in Dan Gordon’s Irena’s Vow to Broadway, beginning on March 10, 2009, at the Walter Kerr Theatre. Opening night has been set for March 29, directed by Michael Parva. The play had a successful off-Broadway run at the Baruch Performing Arts Center beginning in September.
The complete cast includes Sandi Carroll, Tracee Chimo, Steven Hauck, Scott Klavan, Peter Reznikoff, Thomas Ryan, Gene Silvers, John Stanisci and Maja Wampuszyc, all of whom are reprising their performances from the off-Broadway run.
Irena’s Vow is the uplifting true story about one of the most courageous and unsung heroines of World War II. During the German occupation of Poland, Irena Gut Opdyke Feldshuh, a Polish Catholic, was forced to work as head housekeeper for a prominent Nazi major. Over a two year period of service, Irena would risk her own life in order to save the lives of 12 Jewish refugees whom she secretly took under her care.
Irena’s Vow will mark Feldshuh’s first Broadway appearance since her Tony Award-nominated turn as Golda Meir in Golda’s Balcony, Broadway’s longest-running one-woman show. Her other New York stage credits include Cyrano, Rodgers & Hart, Sarava, Yentl, Dreyfus in Rehearsal, She Stoops to Conquer, Mistress of the Inn, Three Sisters, Tallulah Hallelujah!, Full Gallop, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh. Her film work includes Lady in the Water, Just My Luck, Kissing Jessica Stein, A Walk on the Moon, Happy Accidents, The Corruptor, Daniel and The Idolmaker, among others. Feldshuh has also performed two other one-woman shows, Tovah!: Out of Her Mind and Mining Golda: My Journey to Golda Meir.
Playwright Dan Gordon’s stage adaptation of the movie Terms of Endearment recently toured the U.K., and his adaptation of Rain Man, starring Josh Hartnett, debuted in September in London’s West End. His screenplays include Murder in the First, Wyatt Earp, The Assignment and The Hurricane.
The design team for Irena’s Vow includes Kevin Judge scenic design, David Castaneda lighting design, Astrid Brucker costume design, Quentin Chiappetta sound design/composer and Alex Koch projection design.
Irena’s Vow will be produced on Broadway by Stan Raiff, Daryl Roth, Debra Black, James L. Nederlander and Terry Allan Kramer.
