Tony Award winner John Glover has joined the cast of the Roundabout Theatre Company’s forthcoming revival of Waiting for Godot. He replaces the previously announced David Strathairn, who had to pull out of the production prior to the start of rehearsals, in the role of “Lucky.” Godot, directed by Anthony Page, begins previews Friday, April 3, at Roundabout’s Studio 54 with opening set for April 30.
Glover joins previously announced stars Nathan Lane, Bill Irwin and John Goodman. The actor’s numerous Broadway credits include The Important of Being Earnest, Frankenstein, Whodunnit, Design for Living, Love! Valour! Compassion which earned him a Tony for Best Featured Actor, Tartuffe and The Drowsy Chaperone. Off-Broadway credits include Linda Her/The Fairy Garden, Oblivion Postponed, Give Me Your Answer, Do!, Sorrows and Rejoicing and, most recently, The Marriage of Bette and Boo, also for Roundabout. Of his many small and big screen credits, Glover is best know for portraying Lionel Luther on the hit TV series Smallville.
Waiting for Godot revolves around two seemingly homeless men waiting for someone—or something—named Godot. Vladimir Irwin and Estragon Lane wait near a tree on a barren stretch of road, inhabiting a drama spun from their own consciousness. The result is a comical wordplay of poetry, dreamscapes and nonsense, which has been interpreted as a somber summation of mankind’s inexhaustible search for meaning. Goodman will play Pozzo with Glover as Lucky in a cast that also includes Matthew Schechter Boy.
The design team for Waiting for Godot includes Santo Loquasto sets, Jane Greenwood costumes and Peter Kaczorowski lights.
