Due to a back injury, original Rent star Adam Pascal will not be appearing as Roger in the Detroit engagement of the hit musical's tour. Pascal's understudy, Cary Shields, will complete the run in Detroit through February 22, alongside original cast members Anthony Rapp and Gwen Stewart.
Pascal received Obie and Theatre World Awards and a Tony nomination for Best Actor in a Musical for his performance as Roger. His other Broadway credits include Aida and Cabaret. Off-Broadway, he co-produced the hit play Fully Committed. His film credits include Rent, School of Rock, SLC Punk!, Temptation and Goyband. Pascal recently appeared on the hit television series Cold Case. His recordings include Model Prisoner, Civilian and Me and Larry.
Prior to making his Broadway debut as Roger in 2003, Shields appeared in the role in the Canadian cast of the show as well as the second national tour. He originated the role of Marcus in Taboo and was also seen as Whizzer in the national tour of Falsettos.
In addition to Pascal, Rapp and Stewart, the Rent tour also stars Nicolette Hart as Maureen Johnson, Justin Johnston as Angel Schunard, Lexi Lawson as Mimi Marquez, Michael McElroy as Tom Collins, Jacques C. Smith as Benjamin Coffin III and Haneefah Wood as Joanne Jefferson. The ensemble features Karmine Alers, Toby Blackwell, Adam Halpin, Trisha Jeffrey, Telly Leung, Caren Lyn Manuel, Jed Resnick, Andy Senor, Yuka Takara and John Watson.
