The Broadway production of The Story of My Life closed on February 22 after 18 previews and five regular performances. The new musical, which starred Will Chase and Malcolm Gets, began previews on February 3 and opened on February 19 at the Booth Theatre, directed by Richard Maltby, Jr.
The Story of My Life centers on the memories of successful writer Thomas Weaver (Chase), who returns to his hometown to deliver a eulogy for his childhood friend Alvin Kelby (Gets). The show featured a book by Brian Hill and music and lyrics by Neil Bartram, both Broadway newcomers.
After premiere at CanStage in Toronto in 2006 with Tony Award winner Brent Carver starring opposite Jeffrey Kuhn, The Story of My Life made its American debut at the Goodspeed Opera House last fall featuring its Broadway stars. On Broadway, it was produced by Chase Mishkin, Jack M. Dalgleish, Bud Martin and Carole L. Haber, in association with Chunsoo Shin. The intimate musical struggled at the box office from the start, taking in only $106,739 for the week ending February 15.
