Lust, betrayal and retribution: Tickets are now available for the Broadway revival of Eugene O'Neill's
Desire Under the Elms. The new production stars two-time Tony Award winner
Brian Dennehy and rising stars
Carla Gugino Entourage and
Pablo Schreiber. Performances begin at the St. James Theatre on April 14, with opening night set for April 27.
Written in 1924 and inspired by Greek tragedy,
Desire Under the Elms tells the story of widower Ephraim Cabot Dennehy, who returns from California to his family's New England farm with Abbie Gugino, his much-younger bride. Abbie falls madly in love with Ephraim's youngest son, Eben Schreiber, who had claimed the farm as his own before his father's arrival. Their passionate affair ends with tragic consequences for all three characters.
Desire Under the Elms comes to Broadway directly from Chicago's Goodman Theatre, where it was hailed for riveting performances by Dennehy, Gugino and Schreiber and stunning staging by Robert Falls, one of America's foremost interpreters of O'Neill. It's a not-to-be-missed event.
