The Roundabout Theatre Company has announced an open casting call for the first-ever Broadway revival Bye Bye Birdie, directed and choreographed by Robert Longbottom. The audition is set for April 4, 2009, at 10am, and will be held at 115 West 45th Street, on the 11th floor. The show currently seeks boys and girls ages 15-22 to play the teenagers of Birdie’s wholesome Sweet Apple, Ohio. The production will debut in the fall.
Centered on an Elvis Presley-type rock ’n’ roll superstar named Conrad Birdie, Bye Bye Birdie is the story of what happens when the celeb’s agent and secretary, Albert and Rosie, plan a publicity stunt in which one lucky girl gets to bestow a farewell kiss upon their idol before he’s shipped off to the Army. The show, which won a Tony Award for Best Musical, originally opened at the Martin Beck Theatre on April 14, 1960, transferring twice and playing a total of 607 performances before closing on October 7, 1961.
Auditioners should prepare 16 bars of a traditional musical theater song and provide sheet music for the accompanist as well as a headshot and resume. All non-union actors would be required to join Actors' Equity Association for the production.
