Evans received a 2008 Tony nomination for his Broadway debut playing George in Sunday in the Park with George, a part he also played in London, where he won an Olivier Award for his performance. He has appeared as an actor at Sheffield Theatres twice: in Cloud Nine and The Tempest both on the Crucible Stage, and the latter directed by Michael Grandage, previous artistic director of Sheffield Theatres. As an actor, Evans, who also won an Olivier in 2001 for Merrily We Roll Along, has extensive stage credits that include work at the Donmar Warehouse, Royal Shakespeare Company, Royal Court Theatre and National Theatre. His directing credits include projects at the Young Vic, Welsh National Theatre and Guildhall.
Evans takes up the reins at Sheffield as the company prepare to relaunch their new building after a £15.3 million redevelopment. The project is due for completion in November 2009.
“I am thrilled to be joining Sheffield Theatres as artistic director,” Evans said in a statement. “These are exciting times. The theatres belong to Sheffield, and they also have great national significance. The Crucible is undergoing a transformation, as is the city itself and I cannot wait to be part of the renaissance.”
The inaugural season under Evans’ artistic leadership will begin in February 2010.
