Father Comes Home is described as a multimedia story about slavery, freedom, war and family. The first part focuses on a Civil War-era slave named Penny, while parts eight and nine center on a poet-general in the present day. The play has the same title as portions of Parks’ 365 Days/365 Plays but is otherwise unrelated.
Parks holds the Master Writer Chair at the Public, which produced her plays Topdog/Underdog winner of the 2002 Pulitzer Prize, The America Play, Venus, In the Blood, Fucking A and 365 Days/365 Plays.
The Parks play will be preceded by Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson: The Concert Version, featuring music and lyrics by Michael Friedman and a libretto and direction by Alex Timbers. That show will run May 5-24.
