Superior Donuts, the latest drama by August: Osage County playwright Tracy Letts, is headed for Broadway this fall. Tina Landau directs the play, which will begin previews on October 1 at a Shubert theater yet to be named. Casting will be announced soon.
Donuts debuted, like August, at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre where Letts is an ensemble member in June 2008. The Windy City-set story centers on the unlikely friendship between an ex-hippie donut-shop owner named Arthur Przybyszewski played in the Chicago production by Michael McKean and his brash young African-American employee, Franco Wicks played in Chicago by Jon Michael Hill, who wants to change the decrepit shop for the better.
Letts, whose previous works include Bug, Killer Joe, and Man From Nebraska, won the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award for August, which reached its 600th performance on Broadway on May 17 at the Music Box Theatre.
Superior Donuts will be produced on Broadway by Jeffrey Richards, Jean Doumanian, Steve Traxler and Jerry Frankel, the team behind August: Osage County.
