The international dance hit Burn the Floor, featuring the kind of ballroom footwork now enjoying new popularity with the success of shows like Dancing with the Stars and So You Think You Can Dance, will hit Broadway this summer, beginning performances at the Longacre Theatre on July 25. The limited engagement, directed and choreographed by Jason Gilkison, will play through October 18.
Featuring 32 of the world’s top ballroom dancers, Burn the Floor takes audiences on a journey through the drama of dance, traveling from locales such as Harlem’s Savoy, where dances like the Lindy, Foxtrot and Charleston were born, to the Latin Quarter, where the Cha-Cha, Rumba and salsa steamed up the stage, and everywhere in between. The show spotlights the most popular dances of the last century, including the Viennese Walz, jive, tango, samba, mambo, swing and more. The show also features live music and vocalists.
Burn the Floor, a collection of the ballroom’s best, was created in 1998 by producer Harley Medcalf. Since its world premiere in Bournemouth in 1999, the company and its various incarnations have toured the world, playing stages in Australia, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Spain, Japan, China and the United States. The show also appeared last season on TV’s Dancing with the Stars. Burn the Floor is currently on tour in Australia.
The show is being produced by Harley Medcalf and Peta Roby.
