Second Stage Theatre's forthcoming production of the musical Vanities will begin previews on July 2 rather than the previously announced date of June 30. Starring Lauren Kennedy, Sarah Stiles and Anneliese van de Pol, the show is set to open on July 16, directed by Judith Ivey.
Vanities features a book by Jack Heifner (who wrote the hit 1976 play on which the musical is based) and a score by David Kirshenbaum. Spanning the turbulent 60s through the late 80s, the show explores how important friends are as one faces life's defining moments: growing up, getting older and getting over it.
The musical version of Vanities was originally produced at TheatreWorks in Palo Alto in the summer of 2006 and was awarded two Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle Awards for Outstanding Musical Production and Best Original Score. It was also showcased at the 2006 National Alliance for Musical Theatre (NAMT) Festival of New Musicals and was most recently seen at Pasadena Playhouse in August 2008.
Vanities will feature set design by Anna Louizos, costume design by Joe Aulisi, lighting design by Paul Miller, and sound design by Tony Meola. Music Director is Bryan Perri, vocal arrangements by Carmel Dean, and orchestrations by Lynne Shankel.
