Diahann Carroll was the first black woman to win a Tony Award for Best Actress (for No Strings) and the first African-American to garner an Emmy nod (for Naked City). Best known for playing the title role in the groundbreaking TV series Julia and for her three-year stint on Dynasty, Carroll appeared on Broadway in Agnes of God and House of Flowers. Carroll also appeared on stage in a touring turn in Same Time, Next Year (1977) and made an off-Broadway appearance in The Vagina Monologues (1999). In 2001, Carroll made history again, becoming the first black actress to play the iconic role of Norma Desmond in the first Canadian staging of the Tony-winning musical Sunset Boulevard.
