A Sad Yet Star-Spangled Farewell to Spring Awakening

And what a long, surprising trip it was! Almost three years after it debuted off-Broadway at the Atlantic Theatre Company, Spring Awakening closed its two-year run at Broadway's Eugene O’Neill Theatre on January 18 with the last of its 859 performances. Far from your typical Broadway fair, the show took a 115-year-old play about German teenagers, covered it with an indie-pop score and gobs of hair gel, until the end result was an instant hip and timeless classic. Critics  raved but some wondered if a show that took on a host of controversial material would last on Broadway. Indeed it did, earning eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and inspiring perhaps the most loyal following of a Broadway show since Rent.
