Ashanti Prepares for a Summer Getaway in The Wiz

Looking for the perfect summer getaway? How about The Land of Oz?  Encores! is reviving the 1974 rock and soul confection known as The Wiz, just in time for work-weary stage fans looking for a midsummer night away from the ordinary. Starring in the lead role of Dorothy, made famous on film by R&B diva Diana Ross, is Grammy Award-winning recording artist Ashanti in her New York theatrical debut. The singer and actress gave press a sneak peek of what’s to come, stepping out on May 18 at City Center with show director and In the Heights helmer Thomas Kail to show off the musical’s hit song “Home.” The Wiz, which starts performances June 12 and runs through July 5, will also feature screen star Orlando Jones at the title wizard and Tony Award winner LaChanze as Glinda, and boasts musical direction and choreography by In the Heights Tony winners Alex Lacamoire and Andy Blankenbuehler, respectively.
