BC/EFA's Gypsy of the Year 2007 Honors Original Stars of West Side Story
And the show did go on. Despite being hampered by the 19-day stagehands strike that severely limited the abilities of most Broadway shows to fundraise for the annual Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS Gypsy of the Year competition, the community pulled it out, raising a total of $3,297,000, which was announced at the contest's presentation at the New Amsterdam Theatre on the afternoon of December 18. Along with the usual series of skits, the BC/EFA benefit also honored the 50th anniversary of West Side Story, welcoming original stars Chita Rivera, Carol Lawrence and a bevy of Jets and Sharks to the stage. Inspiring us further, they performed a medley from the musical which they helped make a classic.
