Drama Desk Awards Celebrate the Season's Top Shows and Performances
Stars of Broadway and off-Broadway went head to head on May 21 at the 51st annual Drama Desk Awards. The ceremony, held at LaGuardia High School's Concert Hall, was hosted by a wisecracking Harvey Fierstein and clocked in at a leisurely three hours. Among the highlights were live performances from nominated musicals such as Grey Gardens, Jersey Boys and winners Sweeney Todd and The Drowsy Chaperone. Presenter Angela Lansbury and Lifetime Achievement Award winner Horton Foote drew standing ovations, and presenter Fran Drescher slipped and revealed Christine Ebersole as Best Actress in a Musical before reading the list of nominees.
