Hairspray was one of several Broadway shows that chose to honor the memory of the victims of last year's World Trade Center tragedy with a special ceremony following the matinee performance on September 11. Scenic designer David Rockwell reconfigured the wall of lights behind the Hairspray set to form the image of the American flag while star Harvey Fierstein read a moving statement to the teary crowd. Afterwards, castmembers Shoshana Bean, Kamilah Martin, Peter Matthew Smith and Shayna Steele sang "God Bless America" as the entire audience slowly joined in for the anthem.
