LaChanze was back where the
Bubbly Black Girl first "shed her chameleon skin" on Thursday, April 12— Playwrights Horizons on West 42 Street. Prior to her Tony Award-winning tour de force in
The Color Purple, LaChanze starred in this quirky and acclaimed coming-of-age musical by Kirsten Childs at Playwrights in 2000. The show was finally recorded last year (while LaChanze was actually performing
Purple nightly) and now the CD of
Bubbly Black Girl Sheds Her Chameleon Skin has arrived, courtesy of Sh-K-Boom Records' Ghostlight label. We happily attended the CD kick-off party, where LaChanze performed "Skate" from the show— with composer Childs singing back-up! (Look for our forthcoming video of the event.) Until then, click on to check out the scene.
