Ooh Papa Tooney! Ruth Brown Visits Hairspray

Miss Rhythm herself recently stopped by to bless the already-blessed Broadway production of Hairspray. That's right--Ruth Brown, who created the role of Motormouth Maybelle in the John Waters film version, was a guest backstage at the Neil Simon on February 6. Mary Bond Davis, who plays Motormouth in the musical, was thrilled to have some one-on-one time with the legendary lady (She even had her autograph some stills from the film). The ever-gracious Brown, who won a Tony in 1988 for Black and Blue, charmed Davis and other castmembers with memories about the making of the film with Divine, Ricki Lake and the fabulous original cast.
