Play On! Anne Hathaway and Company Open Twelfth Night in Central Park

“For the rain it raineth every day!” So goes the song in Twelfth Night. But miraculously, it did not raineth on the June 25 opening night. Mother Nature must have been smiling down on Shakespeare in the Park—and thank goodness, since the Public Theater had planned a gala evening around the Daniel Sullivan-directed, Anne Hathaway-headlined show: First, there were cocktails and dinner and speeches in praise of the night’s honorees, media mogul Susan Lyne and Oscar and Tony-winning director Mike Nichols; then, an al fresco performance of the Bard’s late comedy, a festive three-hour affair featuring shipwrecked twins, mistaken identities, drunken revelry and multiple marriages; and finally, an after-party at historic Belvedere Castle.
