The 18th Annual
Gypsy of the Year Competition, held on December 4 and 5 at the Neil Simon Theatre, was the grand finale of six weeks of fast and furious fundraising for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. With over 50 Broadway, off-Broadway, and national tour companies pitching in, the effort raised a whopping $2,992,800. The staggering number was announced at the competition, which was hosted by
Spamalot's Marin Mazzie and Jonathan Hadary, and featured several hilarious and many moving performances.
The Color Purple won the award for Best Performance and most dollars raised, while
The Lion King and
Beauty and the Beast shared the prize for runner-up. Congrats, everyone!
