David Cromer’s acclaimed staging of Thorton Wilder’s
Our Town had its official off-Broadway opening at the Barrow Street Theatre on February 26. First presented last year in Chicago - where its raves were so rapturous, it was as if critics had shaken hands with Jesus before the show's end – the new production coincides with the 70th anniversary of Wilder’s eternally appealing drama. The space within the play's new West Village home was completely redesigned to accommodate Cromer’s interpretation, which has the residents of Grover’s Corners milling about, around and among the audience. The setup made for an interesting opening-night curtain, as you can see from the snapshot above.
