About Chess on Broadway

Everything you need to know about the show.

The Story

Chess is the iconic musical where power and passion collide, and the stakes couldn’t be higher. It’s America versus Russia at the World Chess Championship, where the espionage and romance are as complicated and exhilarating as the game itself. For the two players and the woman torn between them, everything—personal, professional, and political—is at risk… and nobody’s rules are the same.

Worth the trip to NYC
"We took the NJ Transit train to the city to catch a Sunday matinee performance of Chess. We were super excited to see the leads in this show and were thrilled at the quality of ALL the performers!!!. But first, let's start with the staff of the venue... Beginning with the guards who were controlling the lines outside the theater to the ushers inside, everyone was professional and pleasant. The show was a delight!! The star power of the 3 leads was exceptional!! The orchestra was phenomenal! The show didn't take itself too seriously and the crowd appreciated the self deprecating humor!! The story line was complicated yet riveting.. Basically, it was a political love triangle with each player being manipulated like Chess pieces, literally and figuratively. We enjoyed the powerful, personal performances of each of the leads. Lea Michele was incredible as Florence with some beautiful solos. Her duet with 'Svetlana" was stunning as well. Our favorite scene was, of course, Aaron Tveit's One Night in Bangkok. Nicholas Christopher absolutely deserved his Tony Award Nomination. Frankly, we felt that each lead was worthy of a nomination. What a pleasant trip to the city for a Tony Award nomination-worthy show!!!"

A revival of a beloved show
"I first saw Chess at the West End London in 1988 and fell in love with the songs. This revival stays true to the original, but with some wonderfully clever updates and embellishments. The main cast is stunning and perfect for each part. I must say that Nicholas Christopher steals the show a bit as his voice, expression, and presence are beyond uplifting. Lea Michele is perfect for her role and I adore her signature sopranic rounded note that precedes an expressive forte. Aaron Tveit nails his character using a more subtle approach highlighting Trumper's callousness and vulnerability all at once. One could not have picked a more perfect lead trio! The chorus, which share much of the stage time, were also stunning having to balance vocal expression with some pretty wild dance moves. They demonstrate what it takes to be a Broadway professional. Overall, I was treated to a most wonderful show and appreciated that the enthusiastic crowed equally shared my love of this Broadway performance. "

A near perfect match
" With all respect to the great Judy Kuhn, Philip Casnoff & David Carroll, this Chess is better than the original B’way. Many script fixes, while faithful to the original London book, lighten the spy v. spy tone of the 1988 version, often to great comedic effect. A spectacular blend of modern tech, gorgeous lighting, sharp staging & choreography & stellar sound design, move the less muddled book along with a full complement of breathtaking stars & supporting cast. Lea Michelle, Aaron Tveit & Nicholas Christopher are brilliant & brilliantly matched. Nicholas’s vocals alone are priceless! See it b4 it’s checkmate!"

Performance exceeded my expectations
"I only knew the basic premise of the show before seeing it. The vocals and acting blew me away. Current events were woven in which added some humor to the serious context. "

Glad I finally saw it!
"The performers were all top notch. The writing was point on and perfectly executed. I enjoyed the band on the stage. The set was amazing, grant it was very minimalist. I am sad it is closing so that more people don’t have the opportunity to see it. The house was full, only real negative was the size of the seats in the theater. "
