Throbbing drums, whirling arms, flashes of bright colors and music which literally moved a room of generally unmovable press folk announced the arrival of new musical Fela! on September 23, when the hot off-Broadway transfer gave insiders a sneak peek at the production to come. Dance icon and Tony Award winner Bill T. Jones, who created, directed and choreographed the pulsing piece spoke passionately of his brainchild, which details the real-life of Afrobeat pioneer and Nigerian activist Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. That passion was contagious, spreading through the room theater at 37 Arts as cast members including title stars Sahr Ngaujah and Kevin Mambo, Tony winner Lillias White, former Hair tribe member Saycon Sengbloh and members of the creative team broke down the innovative musical poised to shake up Broadway.
