Gypsy is the landmark Broadway musical about a domineering mother in the early 20th Century who will do anything to make her young daughters Vaudeville stars. Inspired by the early life of stripper Gypsy Rose Lee, this new production is directed by George C. Wolfe and choreographed by Camille A. Brown, and is the musical that introduced the hit songs “Everything’s Coming Up Roses,” “Let Me Entertain You,“ and “You Gotta Get a Gimmick.”
"There are very few who could hold a candle to Audra McDonald's epic performance. The rest of the cast was also excellent, including Joy Woods' understudy, Shanel Bailey, who was making her debut. I appreciated that Mama Rose seemed to have actual affection for Louise, making her character somewhat sympathetic. In the play, Louise's transformation from sweet and completely unassuming to self-assured happens almost instantly, but Ms. Bailey played both convincingly. Shout out to Kevin Csolak, Lili Thomas, Melinda Hull and Lesli Margherita for making the most of their featured numbers, also to Danny Burstein for somehow making Herbie something more than a doormat. Marley Gomes and Summer Rae Daney were also excellent as Baby June and Baby Louise (note: adding colorism to the mix was a bold and resonant touch). Great costumes, great sets, great lighting, but this show really hinges on Mama Rose. The marquee says: "Audra McDonald is a revelation." Amen to that."

"What a show. Brilliant performers giving deeply felt, beautifully sung , funny performances anchored by the Sun, herself. Audra Macdonald. Hers was the most furious, poignant, brilliantly sung Rose Iā€™ve ever seen. And her Roseā€™s Turn has to be seen to be believed.
We saw a performance with an understudy for Louise. I think it was her first performance and she was wonderful.

""Gypsy" is almost always strong, but Audra McDonald's performance raised it to a new level. I once thought Angela Lansbury's "Gypsy" could never be topped . . . but Audra's was -- well, it was a privilege to be in that theater."

"I have never witnessed such star power before. Audra McDonald absolutely crushes in what will be a legendary performance. Her singing is always immaculate, but her acting brought new levels of pathos to the agonizing downward spiral of Rose and her brood. The production was eye-catching without being distracting and all of the supporting players held their own. But this is Audra's show. See her while you can!"

"Audra is beyond amazing. The entire cast are also truly stellar. Each and every one. They all made this version of Gypsy their own. It was also wonderful to finally see a theatre production use the full depth and width of the stage again instead of relying on tired projections and minimal use of a huge blank canvas of a stage. It felt like good ol' Broadway once again. Wonderful sets, lighting, staging, scene changes and costumes. This is a must-see."

""Gypsyā€¯ is a solid theatrical experience marked by strong performances and engaging music. McDonald delivers a commendable portrayal of Mama Rose, showcasing her vocal talent throughout the show. While there are a few lulls in pacing, the humor embedded in the script keeps the audience entertained. The storyline is interesting, focusing on the complexities of ambition and family dynamics, which adds depth to the characters. Overall, the production balances moments of levity with poignant themes, making it a worthwhile watch for fans of musical theater."
