For decades, the influential Jasper family has been a pillar of Black American Politics: civil rights leaders, pastors and congressmen. But like all families, there are cracks and secrets just under the surface. When the youngest son Nazareth returns home to Illinois with an uninvited friend in tow, the family is forced into a reckoning with itself, its faith and the legacies of Black radicalism. Spirited, hilarious and filled with intrigue, Purpose is an epic family drama from one of the country’s most celebrated voices.
"I liked the way the play captured my attention. Purpose moved me into a space of empathy. It reminded me how important honest expression is because we all have a story. "

Family interactions.
"I liked the characters and the actors who played each other role. The Jasper family, like all families, have issues. How this family exposed those issues and dealt with them are relevant and relatable."

Life is Complex!
"We're cheering for Naz, the lead character, to make things right. That's a struggle, since "making things right" is defined differently, depending on the perspective.
Naz breaks the fourth wall to take us on his journey into his famous and f'd up family of origin. As audience members, we're invited to laugh along with how absurd things can get, all the while readying for the next cringe-worthy (and thought-provoking) moment as the characters reveal how complex real life can get.
It's long - at almost three hours - and I was thinking about what could get cut out to shorten it. I found maybe a total of two minutes that could be removed without damaging the writing. So, just be prepared to jog to the restroom at intermission if you need a break!
The cast is awesome; sometimes the actors do force the characters, but mostly they're IN it, so we're in it with them.
This was an easy one to give a standing ovation to. "

A very thought provoking performance.....
"The show shows a Black family in a different light. It was great to see a show about an upper middleclass Black family, which is what I grew up in. It isn't about a cliche of what a typical black family is always portrayed as. Everyone can learn something from this show."
