Whoopi Goldberg led an array of friends and fans of the last playwright August Wilson in festivities surrounding "August Wilson Day" on April 27 in Bryant Park. It would have been Wilson's 62nd birthday. Goldberg, a star of the 2003 Broadway revival of
Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, read "Janitor," a Wilson monologue that will be studied by New York City students as part of the celebration. On hand to enjoy poetry readings and speeches were Wilson's widow, Constanza Romero, and stars of the current Broadway production of
Radio Golf, including Harry Lennix and Tonya Pinkins. It was a fitting tribute to a writer who is deeply missed in the theatrical community, and Broadway.com joined the crowd.
