In show business, it's all about who you know. Or is it? Andy Lipman, a smart, ambitious kid from Long Island dreams of a career on Broadway and hopes that his idol, theater legend Martin Kerner, can give it to him. Will Kerner open Andy's door to success, or will their complicated relationship force him to question a life in the theater?
What Is the Story of Secrets of the Trade?
As the play opens, a stagestruck 16-year-old named Andy Lipman writes a fan letter to his idol, celebrated Broadway director Martin Kerner. Two years later, Kerner invites Andy to lunch, setting in motion a mentor/mentee relationship that continues sporadically over the next 10 years and affects both men in different ways. In a parallel plotline, Andy’s loving and very involved Long Island parents face the challenge of supporting their son’s ambitions—and feel threatened by his hero worship of Martin.
