Talk about an enchanted evening! Broadway celebrated the opening of the long-awaited revival of Rodgers & Hammerstein's
South Pacific on April 3 at Tavern on the Green. Lincoln Center Theater's production marks the first time the show has been revived on Broadway since the musical first premiered at the Majestic Theatre in 1949. As for why it took 60 years, most guests agreed that such an epic story requires big bucks and a big cast in order to be a success. "And you need a 30-piece orchestra," added director Bartlett Sher. "It's not an easy show to do." Nevertheless, judging from the rapturous reviews the show's received and how tickets sales have been extended into January for an open-ended run, it's clear that this
South Pacific has sets its course for 2009 and beyond.
