The Good Negro Gets Off-Broadway Debut at the Public

The Public Theater celebrated yet another opening of another provocative, revealing show on March 16, as playwright Tracey Scott Wilson’s The Good Negro took to the stage for its official opening night. The new work, starring Joniece Abbot-Pratt, Francois Battiste, J. Bernard Calloway, Quincy Dunn-Baker, Erik Jensen, LeRoy McClain, Curtis McClarin, Rachel Nicks and Brian Wallace, follows a crop of individuals during the civil rights struggle of the early 1960s. More than just an examination of an often discussed subject, The Good Negro focuses on the relationships, betrayals and personal tragedies of its diverse characters. The drama was left onstage following bows, as the Public team joined the show’s players, as well as director Liesl Tommy, in a mellow opening night party at downtown nightspot Colors.
