Welcome to Hadestown, where a song can change your fate. This acclaimed new musical by celebrated singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell and innovative director Rachel Chavkin (Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812) is a love story for today… and always.
Hadestown intertwines two mythic tales—that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone—as it invites you on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back. Mitchell’s beguiling melodies and Chavkin’s poetic imagination pit industry against nature, doubt against faith, and fear against love. Performed by a vibrant ensemble of actors, dancers and singers, Hadestown is a haunting and hopeful theatrical experience that grabs you and never lets go.
Wonderful cast & stellar performances by the understudies
"We absolutely loved the show. We had 7 understudies performing for our show and wow were they phenomenal!! The songs are so catchy, the effects were fabulous, and the choreography was very fun. "

Hadestown Did Not Disappoint
"The show was fantastic. We had read other reviews that said people who didn't know the stories of Orpheus and Eurydice, Hades and Persephone might have a hard time following the story. We did a quick 5 min google search for a synopsis before going to the theater. It did help, though the actors have such fabulous diction we didn't get lost at all. The acting/vocals werr fabulous and the set was amazing."

Simply Wonderful
"I went into the performance without any knowledge regarding the story. I am lost for words. Everything was incredible. The music was powerful, acting sublime, costumes beautiful, set design wondrous, and everything else was excellent. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the entire experience. Will see again, and would definitely recommend. 10 out of 10. "

Fantastic show
"It was my first time on Broadway and I was amazed by choreography and acting skills. It was fun and emotional piece, I can’t throw the soundtrack out of my head! Orfeus was played by Timothy H. Lee but I wouldn’t have figured out he was an understudy - he was absolutely gorgeous!"

A sad song worth singing again
"Hermes has a line near the end of the show where he says Orpheus has a way of making you believe maybe this time he won’t turn back and man I felt that. The tension of the ending really lasts right to the end of the show even knowing full well the myth of Orpheus. Meanwhile it’s propelled by the powerhouse voices of Persephone and Hermes -who I think might be the real ones on loan from Olympus- and the incredible range and tone of Orpheus. What Eurydice lacks in power she makes up for in her stellar acting and the way she emotes on stage. I was crying for her in every song. Hades I’ve seen highlighted as the weak point in several reviews and I have to agree. I thought his voice was lovely and strong and well enunciated but he had almost no chemistry with Eurydice which you want to believe for the plot at least a little right? I also found his costuming almost distractingly bad. However his dance with Persephone DID make me ugly cry. The set was beautiful and the band was incredible however. A true delight to listen to them play especially with Hermes the Fates and Persephone like they were old friends. The music itself I don’t think I need to gush about since this show has won so many awards but I have been listening to the album on repeat since (and fwiw I find the album voices to a person inferior to everyone I heard on stage last night in New York).
The show is one of a handful I won’t ever forget. Hope you go see it. "

Blown away!
"This show exceeded my expectations. I had listened to the music many times, but seeing it live was magical. I brought my niece and she said it best, it changed her life. She was in tears for most of the show. Happy tears. It was beautiful to watch, and so well done. The ensemble was so powerful and precise, loved all of the stars - I can’t even pick a favorite. The songs/story is fabulously written, the musicians were fantastic, the talent of the cast is amazing! "

Don’t wait for Hadestown!
"Fantastically creative story, songs, set; moving performances; amazing voices; powerful choreography. My 14-yr-old’s pic and we’d go again. Complexity of story not for young children. Great for theater lovers, newbies, and youth learning Greek mythology."

Way Down Under the Ground
"Amazing performance! The cast/musicians poured their hearts into the performance and brought my daughter to tears multiple times. I am not familiar with the story of Orpheus & Eurydice but Act II really tied everything together for me. The actors who came to the stage door were very generous with their time and took pictures with everyone who asked and signed everyone’s playbill. I believe it’s a show no one should miss!"

Captivating show with excellent performances
"I wasn’t sure what to expect from the show, but it turned out to be one of my favourites so far. All of the cast were great and so were the musicians. It was wonderful to hear the trombone so prominent in a number of the songs. The whole performance held our attention from the beginning to the end."

Spectacular
"As a professional musician, I’ve played a lot of music from musicals, and have found it, well, lacking. Not counting playing actual musicals, I’ve only been to see one, once: Wicked, and in my home town. The theater is enormous, the sound was uneven, even though the performers were obviously very talented, I thought I had seen my last musical - no need to go again. Well, until I happened to be in NYC and acquiesced to seeing Hadestown with my wife. O…M…G. it was spectacular. No, it was astonishing. I didn’t know Broadway theaters would or could be this “small” and intimate. The level of musicianship coupled with a crazy amount of energy truly blew my mind. To anyone out there who thought musicals were “meh,” go get your mind changed seriously, and see Hadestown. You. Will. Love. It."
