Better get those lights up on Washington Heights quickly, because there’s a star already shining from the audience! The legendary Chita Rivera, who’s left an indelible mark on Broadway with iconic turns in shows like West Side Story, Bye Bye Birdie and Kiss of the Spider Woman, kicked back and took in the sights and sounds of In the Heights on July 16. The song and dance star couldn’t resist the infectious beats and rhythms of the Tony-winning musical, which celebrates the performer’s own Puerto Rican heritage each night on stage. Rivera could hardly contain her excitement after watching the cast of In the Heights twist, twirl and turn their way through their vibrant story of home and history; she excitedly scurried backstage with her daughter Lisa Mordente as soon as the curtain fell. The feeling was mutual, obviously, as the Heights stars (who’ve gotten visits from everyone from Britney Spears to Leonardo DiCaprio) excitedly took turns posing for pics and chatting with Rivera. Lin-Manuel Miranda, the show's vibrant co-creator and original star, was on hand, doling out hugs and taking compliments from Chita. But enough with the set-up—get clicking and see the pictures for yourself!
