About Once Upon a Mattress

WE’RE GONNA NEED A BIGGER MOAT…

Direct from its sold-old, record-breaking New York City Center Encores! run, Once Upon a Mattress returns to Broadway for the first time since 1996. Two-time Tony® winner Sutton Foster gives what The New York Times calls an “ebullient, joyful, perfectly goofy” performance as Princess Winnifred the Woebegone alongside royalty of stage and screen, Michael Urie.

Newly adapted by Amy Sherman-Palladino (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), this New York Times Critic’s Pick introduces the unapologetically eccentric Winnifred to a repressed kingdom, where she charms, delights, and dances her way to the top… of a stack of mattresses.

Book your tickets now to this uproarious production – “it will restore your fealty to the throne!” (Observer).

"It is a fun old fashioned musical that keeps you laughing and smiling throughout. Sutton Foster is amazing. Just to see her on stage is worth the price of admission. Actually everyone in the cast exceeded our expectations. You can say we loved it, the entire cast and Sutton Foster"

"I saw this musical with Carol Burnett years ago on TV (black and white television) when I heard it was going to be on Broadway it is what I wanted to do for my 75th birthday. The acting is perfect, the dancing is fabulous, the timing for jokes was spot on. I loved this performance. Best birthday ever!"

"Sutton Foster and Michael Urie are absolutely fantastic. Actually, everyone in the cast is. Sutton Foster, turning herself into a pretzel and the antics she does on stage, are incredible. Michael Urie‘s facial expressions are the absolute best. We saw the stand in for the jester and he was tremendous. I can’t imagine what the regular cast member is like since the stand-in was stellar. We thoroughly enjoyed it. A nice light, entertaining, funny evening."

"The physicality of the humor was top notch from Sutton’s Princess Winifred to Michael Urie’s Prince. Urie’s climbing stairs had me in stitches. Foster’s physicality throughout was great. The humor was so well-timed. Anna Gasteyer is always outstanding in her roles and she was a great protective Queen. The King moved like a gymnast and impressed. Great for adults and families. I would be lying if I didn’t say that I kept thinking back to Carol Burnett and her spirit is throughout the show. "

"I wasn’t sure what to expect because this is an old musical set up to compete with contemporary shows like Wicked, SIX, etc, but I was SO pleasantly surprised and impressed. You KNEW Sutton Foster would be great and SHE WAS. It is basically her show, but she is surrounded by the hysterical and talented Ana Gasteyer, the goofy but likeable Michael Ure and the surprisingly affable Will Chase. The supporting cast were all terrific. Some jokes were updated and Daniel Breaker was especially charming as the Jester. So worth seeing. Kids will really love it. Sutton is comic gold. "

"Loved Once Upon a Mattress, such a fun night at the theatre! Sutton Foster and Ana Gasteyer were tremendous. Once Upon a Mattress takes the stereotypical classic musical and injects levity and fun without becoming overly treacly. Really enjoyed the show - extremely kid-friendly but very entertaining for adults."

"A great show for the whole family. Lots of laugh out load moments. You could even hear kids giggling at the silly stuff. Not your typical Broadway show. The orchestra was behind and above the cast. Not all of the elaborate sets. But, a really fun show. We had a great time."

"If you want to escape the current world landscape. shake off your troubles for a few hours, this is the show for you. Bubbly, light, fun, colorful... a throwback to the "yesteryear days" of Broadway, this updated version of "Once Upon a Mattress" delights. It's a Masterclass of physical comedy from Sutton Foster, and the goofy poutiness of Michael Urie is familiar and loved. Really, you can't go wrong for a light evening. The material is quaint, the songs are above mediocre (really, that's not a slant...), and you will leave with a smile on your face."

"This play was the most recent of many musicals I’ve seen on Broadway… it measures up to the standard of performance audiences expect! Everyone did an outstanding job. Sutton Foster is just so talented and I kept thinking how much she and Carol Burnett (who originated the role) have in common; her physicality is too funny for words. A great performance! But Ana Gasteyer, who I don’t associate as much with Broadway, blew me away. She was so natural and confident in her performance… and no wonder! She has tons of experience on Broadway and I’m sorry I’ve missed her in the past. (But now I’ve told everyone I know). The remaining male and female members were wonderful, starting with Michael Urie (exceptional in his role) and continuing through the company… I’ll leave someone out if I start naming everyone. What an ensemble! I highly recommend it… great fun!"

"The music provided energetic pacing for a storyline punctuated by humerous songs and dialogue. Sutton Foster was hilarious and Daniel Breaker was effective in moving the story along with humor and focus. I was surprised that I enjoyed the show as much as I did. Great to see Ana Gasteyer as the villain, as well. Great cast. "
