Direct from its sold-old, record-breaking New York City Center Encores! run, Once Upon a Mattress returns to Broadway for the first time since 1996. Two-time Tony® winner Sutton Foster gives what The New York Times calls an “ebullient, joyful, perfectly goofy” performance as Princess Winnifred the Woebegone alongside royalty of stage and screen, Michael Urie.
Newly adapted by Amy Sherman-Palladino (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), this New York Times Critic’s Pick introduces the unapologetically eccentric Winnifred to a repressed kingdom, where she charms, delights, and dances her way to the top… of a stack of mattresses.

"A classic story brought to life in a fresh way with a stellar cast. Sutton Foster shines in physical comedy that you don’t expect with her vocal chops. A superior supporting cast is the perfect compliment for a feel good experience."

"Sutton Foster is hysterical !! Great physical comedy. Even with this minimalist set, it was so entertaining and definitely showcases the talent.

"The performances were outstanding which allowed you to suspend disbelief and just enjoy the show. Great for families or anyone who just wants to get away from the real world for a few hours."

"Sutton Foster was not doing shows last Saturday which I can’t deny was a little disappointing… however her Stand By Kara Lindsay is a first rate Broadway performer and has definite star talent without star name recognition to lure you to a production… but she delivered a first rate performance and definitely was right for the role…
The cast were all first rate and it was great to see and hear a 15 or 16 piece band instead of electronic substitutions…
Very entertaining show perhaps a little heavy on time updates ie a beer helmet and such, but overall well done and very entertaining… and well worth the time…

"The music was enjoyable. I liked the storyteller's singing voice, and I liked the king. All the cast was very talented and convincing. But I didn't like parts of the story itself - the prince being too passive and spoiled, then in the climax very aggressive towards his mother while the audience cheering and clapping. As a mother, I felt anxious about the possibility of children's aggressiveness. I also didn't connect with the princess's sloppy behaviors. While everyone else laughed, I was disgusted. Still, I'm glad that I attended. "

"A terrific star lineup for a very light comedic musical. Without the stars - who are clearly having fun on stage- it would not have been on my list. That said after many serious productions it was good to laugh a little. "

"I was a little disappointed in the production, but I wanted to see Sutton Foster in the lead role of Princess Winnifred. I fell madly in love with her in The Drowsy Chaperone when we saw it back in 2007 (god damn I'm old...lol) and she still has the same energy and comedic talent. It was like she was channeling Carol Burnett, who played the role back in 1959 when if first hit Broadway. Highly recommend it for those of you who like 'classic' Broadway musicals!😉
