For decades, the influential Jasper family has been a pillar of Black American Politics: civil rights leaders, pastors and congressmen. But like all families, there are cracks and secrets just under the surface. When the youngest son Nazareth returns home to Illinois with an uninvited friend in tow, the family is forced into a reckoning with itself, its faith and the legacies of Black radicalism. Spirited, hilarious and filled with intrigue, Purpose is an epic family drama from one of the country’s most celebrated voices.
"The depth and intricacies of the family dynamics is written and portrayed with an elegance above and beyond. So worth it. "

Life is Complex!
"We're cheering for Naz, the lead character, to make things right. That's a struggle, since "making things right" is defined differently, depending on the perspective.
Naz breaks the fourth wall to take us on his journey into his famous and f'd up family of origin. As audience members, we're invited to laugh along with how absurd things can get, all the while readying for the next cringe-worthy (and thought-provoking) moment as the characters reveal how complex real life can get.
It's long - at almost three hours - and I was thinking about what could get cut out to shorten it. I found maybe a total of two minutes that could be removed without damaging the writing. So, just be prepared to jog to the restroom at intermission if you need a break!
The cast is awesome; sometimes the actors do force the characters, but mostly they're IN it, so we're in it with them.
This was an easy one to give a standing ovation to. "
