Great 2nd Act
"Act 1 needs to be rewritten. They missed the mark not including a scene with him as a little boy or the first moment he picked up the coronet/trumpet. Act 2 was wonderful and the women who sang were phenomenal. The tapping and energy really well done. I just feel like Act 1 is what’s holding this musical back. "

A genuine feel good musical review
"I absolutely loved the actor playing Louis Armstrong. He captured him perfectly. The voices of the leads were lovely and the dancing was magnificent. I especially liked the obvious enjoyment of the folks around me and we all had a great time. I didn't especially like sitting in the balcony but I was able to view everything happening on stage."

Not what I expected
"My dad was a consomite musician trumpet 🎺 player since he was 9 years old classically trained but jazz all the way had his own band the Blue Moons. I was raised on Louie Armstrong and all other Jazz trumpet players of that era. I have a special place for Louie Armstrong in my heart been to his house museum in Corona. Although the play was spectacular with singers especially the female singers who played his 4 wives were outstanding and the costumes and dancers phenomenal. I wanted more of Louie playing trumpet and his songs especially you go to my head how long has this been goin on body and soul etc. I was disappointed sorry to say. I would recommend but advise of my opinion. My Dad is gone now many years and I am and older person who was looking for that Louie Armstrong of my childhood and during my Dad's life thank you"

Meh
"Frankly, I found the show a bit depressing. Armstrong was made out to be not a nice guy. He cheated on all four wives, was faking his famous smile and facial expressions for show business effect. All the actors were miming their instrument playing( the actual pit trumpet player nailed the Armstrong style), which was not up to Broadway standards. The Danny Kaye “Saints” number was edited to remove its humorous patter. The female singers all good individually, but one after another became tedious. Not a terrible show, but not a winner either. Armstrong was a jazz innovator, not enough given to that as opposed to his personal foibles."

Not well crafted
"Felt the writers played too much on LA's vices and weaknesses He had some impressive mentors who who helped him overcome impossible odds. The story could have been much more compelling and the songs had greater impact if his humanity and drive had been the central plot. Acoustics at the theater were poor. The actors, music and staging were the salvation of the show."

A low on energy world
"I enjoyed the sets and of course. Unfortunately I thought the show was flat and lacked energy and passion in spite of the talented cast. It's still pleasant enough to watch, just not as compelling as I hoped it would be."
