About Oh, Mary!

Oh, Mary! is a dark comedy about a miserable, suffocated Mary Todd Lincoln in the weeks leading up to Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. Unrequited yearning, alcoholism, and suppressed desires abound in this 80-minute one-act play that finally examines the forgotten life and dreams of Mrs. Lincoln, through the lens of an idiot (playwright Cole Escola).

Declared “one of the best comedies in years” by The New York Times, Oh, Mary! has been heralded as the funniest play on Broadway by the New York Post, Entertainment Weekly, Variety, Time Out New York, and The Guardian. “It’s a bona fide phenomenon,” raves The Wall Street Journal, and Variety calls it “unquestionably the funniest, gayest, campiest play Broadway has seen in years.”

Oh, Mary! is now extended through June 28, 2025. EmmyⓇ nominee Betty Gilpin (GLOW, American Primeval) stars as Mary Todd Lincoln through March 16. Tituss Burgess (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, 30 Rock) stars as Mary Todd Lincoln beginning March 18 for three weeks only!

High school performance level
"Out of everything I've seen on Broadway it was my least favorite show. The play plot was not interesting at all and the performance was poor. Not recommend"

Fun for many -not for me.
"actors were good as were costumes and scenery. it's just a rather silly, dumb play."

I would give it a zero if possible.
"75 minutes of boring old gags. I was warned that it was lewd but it’s not really. Just the kind of “jokes” that have been around for decades. Kind of high school review stuff! I’m not sure why it is popular. Don’t bother!"

Avoid Oh Mary
"The acting was excellent but the show a bore. Although a good farse could be fun, this one is just silly and a waste of time and money. "

Not very funny
"The premise is funny but there’s not one clever line in the whole show. "

Extremely crass. Necessary for what was a good premise
"We had high expectations and were severely disappointed. The actor who played Mary was amazing, but tension between Abe and his aide was cringeworthy, especially the scene under the desk. I realize that I might be on the prudish side but the people in our section were clapping uncomfortable as well. "

Oh no Mary
"Honestly, I thought it was the worst play I've ever seen in my life and I'm 68 years old and I've seen a lot of plays in my lifetime. It was corny and juvenile, but at the same time obscene where it really didn't need to be. I think I chuckled one time. the only good part was it was only an hour and 15 minutes"

Funny? On occasion. Sophomoric? Definitely
"I came to O Mary! with an expectation of a memorable evening. I'd heard from others how uniquely funny the show was. Cole Escola did a great job portraying the part. But, the script they wrote lacked so many areas. At least 4 "jokes" were repeated throughout the play. First time I heard them, I smiled. The second time, I was unmoved. The third ( and fourth times), the jokes were a painful reminder of the juvenile humor throughout the play. I found the yelling between the characters not funny at all, and the portrayal of Lincoln started at the irreverent, but soon became offensive. All in all, probably the worst show I've seen in years."

Odd Woman Out
"The lead actor playing Mary is enormously talented and all the cast were very good. Unlike almost everyone else in the theater, I was not much entertained. This may be a generation gap thing or just me but the humor seemed to have more to do with using and using and using the word “fuck”, which does not seem very creative or thought provoking. I am not from the school where the grosser the gag the funnier. "
